FAQs

What do they do in prenatal massage?

The focus of the session depends on the specific needs of the client. For example, there are prenatal massages that are mainly designed to provide relaxation to the expectant parent and there are other massages that help to relieve discomfort. Massages that provide relaxation may be gentler in pressure if the client so desires whereas massages that aim to relieve discomfort may be more focused on a particular area with pressure that is most suitable to the clients request.

At the Prenatal Massage & Movement Center, we use a combination of Swedish massage, Maya abdominal massage, Spinning Babies® hands on techniques, acupressure and mild stretching. We also use the BodyCushion® system that allows the pregnant person to lie face-down with proper spinal alignment or in a side-lying position while their body is supported by cushions.

When should you start receiving prenatal massages?

The American Pregnancy Association states that prenatal massage is safe at any point in pregnancy. However, some massage centers do not offer massages during the first trimester (first 12 weeks of pregnancy). The Prenatal Massage & Movement Center does not have those restrictions.

Many moms-to-be find that receiving regular prenatal massage sessions during the second and particularly the third trimester to be the most beneficial. This is because the baby has grown to be larger and the body has come under more stress than during the first trimester. Aches and pains as well as swelling are very common towards the end of the second trimester and throughout the third and can be addressed through receiving regular prenatal massage.

Is prenatal massage safe during pregnancy?

Prenatal massage is considered to be very safe during pregnancy and is often a recommended therapy. However, it is always best to let your massage therapist know of any health conditions that you may have before a session.
